Troubleshooting Tips for Empower and Chromebook or a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)



Note: Stop into your Media Center to speak to the Digital Learning Coach or Technology Associate if issue is not resolved or if you are not sure about any of these troubleshooting steps.

These are the typical steps to take when trying to Troubleshoot your device. After each step check and see if the issue got resolved before moving to the next step.


1. Look for Updates (Chromebook or Chrome Browser) [link to resource]

  • On your computer, open Chrome.

  • At the top right, click More (three dots).

  • Click Help > About Chrome OS or About Google Chrome.

  • If needed click Check for Updates (sometimes it will automatically begin checking).

  • If your Chromebook finds a software update, it will start to download automatically.

  • Reboot the Device whether it found an update or not.


2. Clear the Cookies and Cache (Chromebook or Chrome Browser) [link to resource]

  • On your computer, open Chrome.

  • At the top right, click More (three dots).

  • Click More tools > Clear browsing data.

  • At the top, choose a time range. To delete everything, select All time.

  • Next to "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files," check the boxes.

  • Click Clear data.

3. Disable Extensions


  • You may need to log out of Empower and back in to see if an extension was causing the issue.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Additional Troubleshooting Tips


1. Download Google Chrome

2. Sign in to Chrome [link to resource] To sign in to Chrome, you'll need your Google Account and password.

  • On your computer, open Chrome.

  • In the top right, click the name or People.

  • Click Sign in to Chrome.

  • Sign in with your Google Account. If you want to sign in to Chrome with more than one account or you share your computer with others, learn how to add a profile in Chrome.

3. Turn pop-ups off OR Allow pop-ups from a site [link to resource]


a. To turn pop-ups off:

  • On your computer, open Chrome.

  • At the top right, click More (three dots) > Settings.

  • At the bottom, click Advanced.

  • Under "Privacy and security," click Content settings.

  • Click Popups.

  • At the top, turn the setting to Allowed or Blocked.


b. To Allow pop-ups from a site:

  • .On your computer, open Chrome.

  • Go to a page where pop-ups are blocked.

  • In the address bar, click Pop-up blocked.

  • Click the link for the pop-up you want to see.

  • To always see pop-ups for the site, select Always allow pop-ups from [site]
